Honoring the Legacy of Johnathan Melvin Osmond
It was the lifelong dream of Melvin Osmond to transform the small harbour of Smith’s Harbour into a welcoming space for boating enthusiasts—showcasing its breathtaking beauty and serene waters.
Before the final phase of the marina’s development was completed, Melvin tragically lost his battle with lymphoma on December 9, 2014, at the age of 72. His passing was a profound loss for both his family and the entire community.
Melvin was a great leader, active volunteer, and a pillar of strength, whose dedication and pride for Smith’s Harbour never wavered. His journey began in 1953, when at just 11 years old, he moved with his parents from Birchy Cove to Smith’s Harbour, bringing their family home with them. His father transported the family by motorboat, emblazoned with the letters "JMO"—a tribute to his only son, Johnathan Melvin Osmond.
From the day he arrived until his passing, Melvin considered Smith’s Harbour the best place on earth—a peaceful and picturesque retreat.
As a community, we take great pride in the developments and progress made here and continue to honor the legacy of Johnathan Melvin Osmond, celebrating his vision, dedication, and love for the home he cherished.
