Nestled along the rugged Northeast shores of Green Bay, Smith’s Harbour is a small but resilient fishing community with a rich history and deep-rooted traditions. Protected by Smith’s Island, a natural breakwater at the harbour’s entrance, this inlet has been home to hardworking fishermen and loggers for over two centuries.
The origins of Smith’s Harbour trace back to the early 1800s, when John Smith first settled the area. The community was named after him, as was the small island at its entrance. Fishing was the heart of early life here, with men rising before dawn to harvest cod from the well-known fishing grounds—Bug-Ledge, Smith’s Rock, Burn Island Ground, King’s Island Ground, and Piss-pot.
By 1845, the first census recorded just three residents. Over time, families from surrounding settlements such as Stocking Harbour, East Stocking Harbour, Ben’s Point, Shelley’s Beach, and Jerry’s Island relocated to Smith’s Harbour, contributing to its steady growth. The 2021 census recorded 187 residents, a testament to the community’s perseverance.
Fishing and logging were the primary industries, sustaining families through generations. Fishermen relied on traditional methods like hook & line and cod traps, later adapting to gillnets in the 1960s. Meanwhile, loggers braved the harsh winters, cutting timber with bucksaws and hauling it by horse and sled. The lumber was stored at the government wharf before being shipped to St. John’s.
Though many residents have sought work outside the province, Smith’s Harbour remains a close-knit community that values its heritage. The harbour’s tranquil waters, rugged coastline, and strong community spirit make it a place unlike any other—a place where the past and present come together in harmony.
